I always wanted to be named after Maria in West Side Story. I'm not. I'm actually named after Maria in The Sound of Music, which is fine, but not quite as romantic. So imagine my excitement at hearing that there's going to be a double dose of West Side Story right here in Seattle.
The Pacific Northwest Ballet is putting on a very unique Broadway Festival starting today and running through March 22 that includes dances and songs from West Side Story (Dance at the Gym, Cool, and America). The unique twist is that the dancers will also be singing, a venture some of the performers were nervous about, reports the Seattle Times. Also being performed in the Festival are Carousel (A Dance), TAKE FIVE... More or Less, and Slaughter on Tenth Avenue.
In conjunction with the Broadway Festival, the Seattle International Film Festival will be showing the musicals that the dances are taken from. On Your Toes will be shown on March 13 at 7:30 p.m., Carousel plays on March 14 at 7:30 p.m. and West Side Story runs March 15 at 7:30 p.m.
