Times have really changed. I'm old enough to remember the waning days of the 8-track player and cruising in a friend's Chevy Malibu with KISS blaring from the 8-track on the way to a small town high school football game. Fast forward a few years and we've moved on to mini-vans and iPods, but that same friend is now fronting a cover band playing heavy 70's tunes. I intend to relive a bit of my youth by attending his show at Jules Maes Saloon this Friday, January 9th, at 9 pm.

Doug Spencer, lead guitarist and lead singer for Murgatroyd, says the band plays the "'beginnings' of heavy metal that we all went to high school with... music by bands like UFO, Ted Nugent, Angel City, Scorpions, etc."

The night won't be all about the past, however, as two other rockin' bands are in the line-up. Scattergun was at the top of the NWsource People's Picks in 2007 for cranking out "hard-driving, whiskey-soaked country rock that Ronnie Van Zant would be proud to claim as his own," and Man Alive will be offering up some kickin' original hard rock.

Jules Maes Saloon is a good choice any night of the week with great food and casual fun, but this Friday should be an even better choice. A $5 cover will get you in the door.

And points given to anyone who can tell me who said "Heavens to Murgatroyd!" Without Googling.
