Hello, my name is Maria and I am a science fiction addict. My children torment me with sci-fi geek jokes, friends roll their eyes and smirk, and colleagues treat me like one with an exotic, incurable disease. The incurable part, at least, is correct. My addiction is insatiable. I devour books by Asmiov, Baxter, Bova and Clarke; I once built a model of the Starship Enterprise; I asked for a Dr. Who sonic screwdriver for Christmas; I hunger for news of Battlestar Galactica.
So it is with considerable pleasure that I present you with just a few of the upcoming science fiction events in 2009. It's going to be a good year. Feel free to subscribe to this topic for future sci-fi announcements. Just click the link at the bottom of this post.
January 16 - season premier of Battlestar Galactica on the Sci-Fi Channel at 10 pm.
February 7 - the 4th annual Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival presented by the Science Fiction Museum and the Seattle International Film Festival. Held at the Seattle Cinerama Theater, there will be 2 sessions of 10 short films each, with an awards ceremony after the second.
April 9 - 12 - Norwescon, Seatac, WA - "Norwescon is one of the largest regional Science Fiction conventions in the United States. While maintaining a primarily literary focus, Norwescon is large enough to provide a venue for many of the other aspects of Science Fiction and the interests of its fans such as anime, costuming, art, and much, much more."
April 14 - publication of The Immortality Factor by Ben Bova
May 8 - premier of Star Trek (2009) movie - be aware that there is likely an alternate universe storyline with this movie. Go watch the trailer and reserve judgment.
May 22 - 25 - WisCon 33, Madison, Wisconsin - "This is the world's leading feminist science fiction convention."
July 9 - 12 - Readercon 20, Burlington, Massachusetts - "Readercon is, depending on your point of view, either an annual literary conference (except it's infinitely more fun than that) or an annual science fiction convention (except we've stripped away virtually everything except talking about and buying books)."
July 10 - opening of 2012 movie - with a cast including John Cusak, Amanda Peet, Thandie Newton, Danny Glover and Oliver Platt and a storyline about the end of the world as predicted by the Mayans, this looks interesting.
July 31 - August 2 - SpoCon - local science fiction and fantasy convention in Spokane, WA, held at Gonzaga University.
August 6 - 9 - The Official Star Trek Convention 2009 at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel. Guests include William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Jonathan Frakes, Dominic Keating and Vaughn Armstrong.
August 6 - 10 - Anticipation, The 67th World Science Fiction Convention "will be held in Montréal, Quebec, at the Palais des congrès de Montréal" - this is the granddaddy of conventions where the annual Hugo Awards are presented. Neil Gaiman will be this year's guest of honor.
