No other dog breed evokes stronger emotions than pit bulls. Unfortunately, these emotions are often based on misinformation and graphic media accounts of pit bull attacks. They also often lead to attempts to pass breed specific legislation (BSL) that would either ban people from owning certain breeds of "dangerous" dogs, including but not limited to pit bulls, or place restrictions and regulations on those breeds. Many attempts at legislation have been successful, but there are groups and organizations that fight against BSL on the grounds that no dog breed is inherently aggressive toward humans and that when dogs attack it is the deed and the owner that should be punished, not the breed.
One Seattle group, Families Against Breed Bans (FABB), works to educate the public, help owners find training and resources for their dogs and fights against BSL. Their website includes education resources, event information, links, and the truth about pit bulls, among other things. On Saturday, December 13th, from 2 to 4 pm, FABB will be holding a fundraiser at the Wedgwood Ale House, located at 8515 35th Ave NE. They will be selling skin care, cosmetic and gift items from the Arbonne line, with nearly half of the proceeds going to FABB. They ask that you RSVP to fabbseattle@gmail.com if you plan to attend, or feel free to become a member by clicking the link on the website homepage. The fundraiser is also a good opportunity to meet and socialize with members of the group and learn more about what's going on with BSL in Seattle and around the rest of the country. You can also check out their Facebook page for more information.
