For some people, a half-naked plunge into water just north of freezing is a refreshing start to a new year. We call those people polar bears. By "we" I mean the rest of us who are content to stand on the shore bundled in parkas and mittens, sipping hot chocolate and cheering while the polar bears plunge into the frigid water of Lake Washington.
On New Year's Day, shortly before noon, somewhere around 1,000 brave and slightly crazy people will be lining the beach of Matthews Beach Park for the 7th annual Polar Bear Plunge. At the stroke of twelve they leap in and come back out to hot drinks and a Badge 'O Courage. They encourage you to join them and even to wear a costume if that suits your fancy. You won't be alone, although I won't be joining you. I will, however, applaud.
All the information you need to enjoy your plunge, or cheer people on, can be found on the website. Be sure to read the tips carefully to avoid hypothermia, which wouldn't be such a great way to start a new year.
The Matthews Beach Polar Bear Plunge certainly isn't the only one of its kind. Live in another city and wish to join the icy elite? Google can help you find a plunge near you.
