It won't be long now before the turkey is a pile of bones and the last spoonful of cranberry sauce is gone and we start digging through boxes and untangling the holiday lights. For some of us it's a strand or two. For others, it's a display that can be seen from space. Still others prefer to go for a drive or a walk to get their fill of lights. Whatever your pleasure, we've got five of the best holiday lighting events in the area for you to choose from. Click on the links for event information.
Green Lake Pathway of Lights
Saturday, December 13th from dusk until 8:30 p.m.
"Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Green Lake Center Advisory Council once again present the Pathway of Lights, the ring of luminaria that light Green Lake for one magical evening each year." There will be three tents set up at the Community Center, the Aqua Theater and the Bathhouse Theater for live performances and plenty of holiday cheer. You're asked to bring 2 cans of food for Northwest Harvest which can be dropped off at any of the tents, and the lake will be lit no matter what the weather. Volunteers are also needed for lighting and placing luminaria from 4 to 5:15 pm, so if that appeals to you, visit the website for information.
Zoolights at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium
November 28, 2008 - January 4, 2009 from 5 - 9 pm
Over half a million lights illuminate the zoo, turning it into a fairy wonderland. This is a spectacular event and one of the best holiday light displays in the state. Wander the zoo, visit the animals, enjoy live performances and watch children's eyes shine.
Candy Cane Lane
December, 4 pm - midnight
NE Park Road at Ravenna Blvd. NE
This display is as much about its history as its present. Since the 1940's the houses on the loop road off of Ravenna Blvd. have put on a light display that brings people from all over the city. Walk or drive the loop to enjoy the decorated houses all in a row, and the traffic island in the middle of it all. They also collect food for Northwest Harvest so bring a can or two.
Woodinville Light Festival
Friday, December 5th
"Bring your whole family and friends and enjoy a stroll through the Civic Campus gardens and view thousands of holiday lights, enjoy music and entertainment on two stages, ride the free lighted train, view art at the teen arts how, listen to local choirs at the Choirfest, view gingerbread house displays, and make crafts at Santa’s Workshop. Don’t miss the arrival of Santa when he flies in by helicopter, as well as the holiday character parade and autograph session. Event activities held on the Civic Campus (Carol Edwards Center and City Hall) and at the Brittany Park Retirement Community."
Seattle Santa Lights Tour
Saturday, December 13th, 7 pm
"Santa Claus takes time out from his busy schedule at the North Pole for a 2-1/2 hour tour of Seattle's best Christmas lights.
For the twenty-fourth year the Metro Employees Historic Vehicle Association (MEHVA) is sponsoring excursions and special trips using our fleet of historic trolley and motorbuses. All trips will depart from 2nd Ave. S. and S. Main St., across from the Seattle Fire Department Headquarters. Fares are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors (65 and over) and $4 for children (2-11). Metro transfers, tickets, or passes are not accepted. Please, no food or beverages onboard the historic buses."
If you like to just get in your car and drive around a well-lit neighborhood, check out the database at King 5 News, where you can search for light displays using parameters such as city, county, zip code, residential display, commercial display, animated, theme and more. You can also submit your own holiday light wonders for others to ogle. It's a little sparse at the moment, but that will change as the calendar clicks over to December.
