I am a huge fan of education. As a matter fact, I am a strong advocate of higher learning, just based on what having a college degree and what it has done for me in my life. Forget about what I believe. The numbers speak for themselves. If you look at the statistics, some one with a bachelor’s degree versus a high school diploma or below earns a much more significant amount over the course of their lifetime.

But, there’s one issue I would like to address that’s missing in college. A life skills curriculum should be mandatory for graduation. I’ve begun to take notice about the influx of college graduates, in particular in my neighborhood and by watching the news, of who are unprepared upon entering the real world. I’ve noticed that graduates are still wearing doo rags, sagging jeans and aren’t even prepared to wear a tie or wear a suit properly and how to conduct themselves during a job interview. Yes there is a career development center in college, but they’re optional and most students don’t utilize them, because they don’t have to. And the amount students who graduate with a low financial IQ is ridiculous, even something small as balancing a checkbook.

With mandatory life skills courses, which must be taken in order to graduate, students will be way more prepared for the workforce and how to conduct themselves to be productive citizens in society. A curriculum that prepares graduates how to cook, clean, dress, manage money and address professionalism will make a college degree even more priceless. A college education mixed with common sense tactics on the basics aspects of life makes a strong individual, ready to handle any situation given and not just from a theoretical standpoint either.
