Welcome, Romance Lovers!

This morning's guest is Romance author Lise Fuller, who just had her first erotic Romance novel released by Ellora's Cave Publishing!  She also writes for Cerridwen Press, Ellora's Cave mainstream Romance line.

Welcome To Examiner.com, Lise! Tell us a little about yourself.

Thanks Fran!  Hmmm, well, before I published I was a management consultant. I have my MBA and CPA, but when 9-11 hit my husband deployed and with a 10 year old at home (at the time) it was hard to travel.

I’d been in love with romance for a long time—ever since I’d read The Wolf and the Dove by Kathleen Woodiwiss and already had drafted a few manuscripts. Beginner things. But they were enough to keep me going. Anyway, when my husband deployed we’d decided as a family to downsize and for me to start writing full time. So, I did.

Of all the past great Romance authors, who would you say had the greatest influence on you/your writing style?

Hard question. There are so many. Of course, there was Kathleen Woodiwiss as I’ve already mentioned. But I think others, even non-romance authors, had a great impact. Many times it could have been one thing that one author did. How they described something or their sentence structure and timing. There are so many authors I just love, there’s too many to name them all.

How do you find ideas for your books? Real happenings? Dreams? A great imagination?

Many, many ways. Often I have a reoccurring dream in the early morning. But I also pull out articles from newspapers, etc. that I find interesting. My mind tends to ‘cook’ on these things then all of a sudden I come up with an idea.

How difficult is it for you to get into “writer’s mode”?

Whew, well I guess it depends on how many distractions I have at the moment. LOL! Being an army wife is not easy, especially when you’re alone raising your child or children. My children, my family, always come first. That’s my motto. Then I write. And I’ve written almost everywhere—cafes, at home, with music or whatever. I sometimes do find it easier to write away from home though, because in the house, believe it or not, I keep seeing things that need to be done and it bothers me until I get up to do it.

I saw your new release from Ellora's Cave online! I'll bet you are excited! Tell me a little about your new book.

Yes! I’m really excited about it. Almost all of my books are romantic action/adventure but this is the first ‘erotic’ romantic action/adventure. And probably the best way to tell you about it is just to iterate the blurb. Here it goes ~

Guardian Angel
Lise Fuller
ISBN: 9781419922527
Publisher: Ellora’s Cave 2009

Someone needed to protect her…

With her partner dead and his dangerous associates after her, fear made Marie run—and drove her right into the arms of Jake Colder, the sheriff of the small town where she sought refuge. The sexual attraction between them is instant and intense, but even the taste of heated nights spent with Jake’s gorgeous hard body wrapped around her isn’t enough to let Marie relax her guard. If Jake knew what she’d done, he’d arrest her, exposing her to the deadly greed of the men who pursued. Still, as hard as she tries to stay away from the hunky sheriff, some inexplicable force keeps pulling them back together.

And that someone was Jake.

Jake knew Marie needed his protection. He’d been warned by the ghost of his great-great-grandfather, the family guardian for over a century. Whatever the trouble was, there was one thing he was sure of—he wanted Marie in his life, in his bed, forever, and no one was going to hurt her on his watch.

How did the inspiration for this work come to you?

Great question. In some ways, this was one of those gift books. It is one of my first manuscripts that I wrote when I was a consultant. I would always stay at this little motel in Ft. Bridger, Wyoming. One night, when I was walked around after work, the serenity of the place stirred me. Now whether it was because of the ghost that is supposed to protect the place or not, I don’t know. But the idea hit. I went back to my motel room and wrote over 50 pages that night. A huge feat for any author.

Do you identify with the characters you write about?

Often, yes. And no matter what, I have to be in their heads when I’m writing them. Now, they aren’t me, but there are things about them that I certainly can identify with. In Guardian Angel, Marie is an investor. She gets caught up in her partner’s scheme and runs when she thinks she’s killed him. Although I’ve never killed anyone! Trust me! However, I can understand the complications she goes through, the aloneness and the need for someone to care. And I think similar things about my heroes. It’s really hilarious, but my husband sooooo identifies with them. He reads everything I write, gives me the male insight and it’s a stitch when he emails me and signs his name as my character.

You have several books in print. Is there a favorite among them? Why?

This is a tough question. I love all my books. And probably the one I’m most in love with at any one point in time would be the one I’m working on as that’s the one I dream about. If I’m in-between a book, then it’s whatever I happen to be in the mood for. Like I said, most of them are romantic action/adventure. My first published one, On Danger’s Edge, is kind of a Romancing the Stone with a military hero. In this book, Rorie Lindsay, our intrepid photojournalist, flees through the steaming jungles of Panama with a man she doesn’t want but can’t resist. Needless to say, our hero’s, Tom MacCallum’s, mission in that one is to get Rorie and her camera out alive. Then I have a sequel to that, Intimate Deceptions, where the plot is much more complicated. And I loved this one to. Just to give you an idea about it, here’s some thing I worked up for an ad.

A kidnapped daughter...
...A spurned lover as an unwanted ally.
Repressed desires flare when Special Forces Sergeant Brodie Crawford aids Elena Ramirez to save her child, one who bears a striking resemblance, not to her ex, but to Brodie.

My other one in print, Cutting Loose, is a great fun book about a shy woman and a sexy ex-football player. Here’s a bit on that~

What do an aging chimp, a reclusive zoologist and a sexy, dynamic pro-football player turned ad exec have in common? Zoologist Mira Harper never anticipated her promise to “go wild” would include ad-exec Gary Staunton, a self-made man whose rock-hard body ignites her inhibited libido. Gary needs Mira’s sexy voice for his ad—yet when the seductive woman asks for more, temptation is too hard to resist. Now that he’s tasted heaven, he doesn’t want to let her go.

Yikes! And I can’t really tell you about the four or five I have in my head right now. So you see, it’s tough, tough, tough….

What advice would you like to give aspiring writers to help make life easier for them?

Easier? It’s never easier. It always gets tougher. Writing the MS, even getting someone to pub it is only the beginning. There is so much more. Reviews, promotion, everything. Most writers have to do all of this themselves.

Thing is, be a prepared as you can, have a plan. I’ve always liked the saying: “Fail to plan, plan to fail.” It works for so many things in life. And they need to remember, writing is writing. It’s fun, wonderful, hard. But publishing is business.

You have to make the best business case you can.

Thanks so much for taking the time to be here, Lise!  One last question...where can readers find you on the web?
