The American Federation of Teachers opposes SB 834, saying in its Legislative Alert, "If your position is public education includes certified teacher, school nurse, librarian, coach, teacher assistant, bus driver, cafeteria worker, secretary, or custodian, this bill could affect your job."
The AFT also lists the ways that compliance regulations for public schools would change as deregulation effectively changes public schools into charter schools. The list includes things as simple as having handbooks for students and parents and goes into issues as complex as CLEP plans.
OEA is planning to mobilize member of its teachers union on March 25 to lobby at the senate, and AFT is surveying members, saying "please let your senator know how you feel about this." It is important that teachers, parents, and community members learn about SB 834 and evaluate the impact a deregulated school would have during for students.
