Metro Police go on “illegal handgun” drive
The city’s finest have been picking up illegal handguns left and right over the past week. On March 10, four handguns were recovered in southeast, northeast, and northwest DC. On March 11, another four handguns were confiscated, as well as a BB gun – which will get you in trouble in DC. And on March 12, DC Police recovered yet another semi-automatic handgun and one “assault weapon.” That makes eight handguns, an assault weapon and a BB gun, in the space of three days.

Sexual assault suspect sought
An unknown suspect sexually assaulted a victim in the Unit Block of Mississippi Avenue, SE at around 1:35am on Saturday, March 7. He’s described as a black male, early 40s, about 5’7” and sturdily built. He has a dark complexion and a mustache, and was last seen wearing a black hat, black jacket and black pants. There’s a reward of $1000 for any tips leading to this guy’s arrest. Call the police at 202-727-9099 or try their anonymous tipster line at 1-866-411-TIPS.

Don’t drive (or walk) in Virginia
A recent release by the Fairfax police details the death of a woman on Tuesday, February 24 as the result of an accident at approximately 7:25pm. Galia S. Quispe, 37, of Vienna, was struck by a Honda CRV as she attempted to cross the road against the crosswalk signal and outside of the crosswalk area. On March 8, an 80-year-old woman was found on a Silver Lake Boulevard Crosswalk at around 8:10pm, suffering from life-threatening injuries as the result of a hit-and-run. And a little rooting around Fairfax’s arrest records reveals almost 800 arrests for reckless speeding since January – with three counts of doing 80-150mph in a 55 zone.

End-the-violence concert ends in violence
Police were called in after fighting broke out at a March 7 concert in Silver Spring. The concert had originally been held to promote non-violence; somebody didn’t get the memo.

Hit-and-run (on foot)
A Dodge Neon struck a school bus after running a red light in Silver Spring. The school bus driver and one student were taken to hospitals, while the driver of the Neon decided to high-tail it on foot. The accident, occurring around 4pm, played havoc on local traffic.

Cemetery vigil shooting
A vigil on Lincoln Road NE, held for Sean Cope, a man who’d been fatally stabbed in Silver Spring over a year ago, was the scene of a drive-by shooting at around 7pm on March 10. Four victims, all between the ages of 18 and 20, were struck by bullets sprayed from a gray SUV.
