Whoever said this was impossible?

Hooray, another national holiday to celebrate - it's April 22nd, aka, Earth Day. Earth Day was founded in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, who proposed the first nationwide environmental protest "to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda". Good gamble, Gaylord. What was first recognized as a national issue over 30 years ago, is thankfully still moving forward slowly, less dramatically, but surely.

Companies are capitalizing on Earth Day to push their green initiatives, advertise their green deeds, and garner some good PR for the work they have been doing. Sun Chips aired an inspiring commercial last night touting the world's first compostable chip bag, which will be available on Earth Day 2010. Check out the subtle but beautifully shot commercial here. Their current bags are already made of 33% of decompostable material. The new ones will disintegrate in 14 days if placed in a hot, active compost bin. How often these bags will actually end up in hot, active compost bins is questionable, but regardless, it is definitely an admirable step in the right direction. In fact, their entire product and marketing strategy is based around being healthy, natural, and sustainable. Gotta love that.

Xerok is hosting a handful of community building events. Microsoft, HP, and Nokia are among some of the other big names that are having events on their corporate campuses to bring attention to Earth Day and their corporate intiatives. On the Warner Bros. Lot in Burbank, Stage 23 was unveiled as the first "green" sound stage built by a major studio. It also boasts the  entertainment industry's largest solar electrical system, recently expanded to 500-kilowatts.

Disney is releasing the breathtaking documentary, Earth, which follows three species of mothers and babies over a year, full of majestic aerials showcasing Mother Nature's beauty and harrowing moments to warn us of the disaster that we, as humans, can cause. The kicker? For every audience member that watches Earth during this opening weekend, Disney will plant a tree in their name. Awww...feeling that Disney magic yet?

Hopefully these major companies which have large eco-footprints to worry about will continue to pursue their green goals, especially with the reminder of Earth Day. And hopefully their actions can inspire other businesses to realize that being innovatively eco-smart can be incredibly beneficial multitude of ways.
