Safely using a space heater
This time of year with the cold and wind we are often looking for alternative methods for heating, to save money or improve the comfort of our living space. Space heaters are an inexpensive alternative for heating small areas but also present a greater fire risk than other heating methods.
The following are 5 simple suggestions to assure your and your families safety when using space heaters:
1. Keep all combustibles, things that can ignite, at least 3 feet away from the space heater. This includes curtains, blankets and clothes. If you have a teenager that leaves everything on the floor you might want to do your own inspection each day.
2. When buying a new space heater verify that it has been approved by an independent testing laboratory such as UL (underwriter’s laboratory)
3. Plug the space heater into an outlet with sufficient capacity. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for this information.
4. Never use an extension cord to plug in your space heater
5. Turn the space heater off when the room is unoccupied.
