Senator Specter, who had Democratic leanings in his youth, made the announcement on April 28, 2009, that he will be returning to his Democratic roots after serving as a Republican senator since 1980.
Amid Republican criticism that it was a political move, because he could sense a possible loss to a Democrat in the next Pennsylvania election, Senator Specter said “I didn’t leave the Republican party. I feel like they left me. They had moved to far too the right.”
Senator Specter has long been known as a moderate Republican, because of his liberal views on women’s reproductive
rights, the environment, and immigration. He co-sponsored the Bingaman-Specter bill, which was called the Low Carbon Economy Act, in 2007. Arlen Specter has expressed his interest to President Obama about working on future legislation for climate change and he understands the impact of global warming.
Lately, the noise about global warming and how it impacts climate change has escalated between believers and non-believers, which fall along party lines. The conservative commentators like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Glenn Beck seem to be leading the pack with their loud and scathing accusations about a gigantic conspiracy by pseudo-scientists and politicians. In the current vacuum of Republican leadership, many conservatives seem to gravitate to whoever talks the loudest, without concern for factually based argument.
This question, “when did saving planet Earth become a liberal cause?” was asked by Bill Maher on his show Friday night, April 24th.
One of Bill’s guests, Dana Gould, responded, “is it because Al Gore had a smart idea about this and they (conservatives) would rather fry than admit the other side might be right?”
With the defection of Arlen Specter and the final count expected to be awarded to Al Franken, it gives the Democrats the 60 vote power against Republican filibuster.
Welcome home, Arlen Specter!
