Mark Heuer, the 46-year-old Kewaskum, WI, marketing and operations executive who took out a billboard in March to advertise himself, has found a job. On Monday he starts his new position as the director of client experience for a Wisconsin franchisee of Home Instead Senior Care, an Omaha, Neb.-based firm that offers non-medical services to the elderly.

Last March, I wrote about Mark and his billboard and today he answered some questions for me by email.  Below is his reply.

  1. How did the billboard help your job search?

The billboard brought over 2,000 responses with emails of well wishers, MLM opportunities and a minimum 30 very legitimate opportunities to discuss with decisionmakers that fit my skill sets. It also offered me the opportunity in the midst of these numbers to help people unfortunate in these unprecedented times without work. I responded to emails, I returned telephone calls and met with the unemployed people in person, in some cases.

2. How did you find your current job?
I found my current job with Home Instead Senior Care as I was looking to potentially buy a franchise in an open territory near where I live. I went to meet with Steve Nooyen to seek his thoughts since he was one of the top five successful franchises in the system today of over 450 in existence. Somewhere in our meetings it was a natural transition to would I consider working directly with Steve’s business. And several meetings later and what that would look like the decision was made to join Steve’s Director’s level in Client Experience.

3. What is your advice to job seekers?
My advice is do something outside the ordinary – I would still promote a billboard, I would do a car wrap or a bus wrap advertising my credentials, I would buy yard signs with my website on it and post it in front of potential employers. I definitely would not spend much time at all looking at jobs on The Ladders, Career Builder, Monster or many of the simular venues. Most importantly I would find support groups and leverage my support to keep me upbeat and get out and walk into front doors of businesses and pick up the phone and try and call decisionmakers first-hand. Ultimately, do things no one else will and the worse that can happen is someone says no. I would follow up multiple times with what I believe could open doors, be politely persistent.

4. What is most valuable lesson you've learned from your experience?

“Humility” – in the grand scheme of life we deserve nothing and that if “One wants to be Served, One must Serve First”. That it isn’t the top shelf in which we are able to reach and grab our rewards, it’s sometimes having to stoop to the bottom shelf to get what we deserve.

Way to go Mark! It's great to spread good news like this. Any readers out there who have landed work or started a new venture? Contact me with your story or share your good fortune in comments below.
