With circulation of the print edition of the New York Times taking on water, along with drowning advertising revenue and the company's stock value, the lifeboats have been filled for months. Some have already jumped overboard. In fact, the situation at the Times is so dire, the only thing going up is unique visitors to its online edition, which is up around 20 million a month, and the New York Times Company’s debt, which is up past $1 billion. Add to that potential payment defaults of over $400 million waiting like sharks in the water to relentlessly rip the 158-year old paper to shreds.
Will the Grey Lady, as the paper is known, be able to survive the crisis in newspapers and the economic crisis?
Michael Hirschorn has a fascinating piece in this month's Atlantic, to paraphrase, that says "No," then "Maybe," and then “not without some serious changes.”
