South Carolina's high school rugby regular season finishes tonight with six teams looking to cement their position in the standings ahead of the March 27/28 state playoff.
The University of South Carolina's Blatt Field will be the venue for three games kicking off at 6p.m.
Spring Valley (4-2) Vs Brookland Cayce (3-2-1)
Despite a defeat last week to Greenville, Spring Valley still have the better record. However BC will be buoyed by a big win over struggler's Irmo.
This game is David V Goliath.
Coach Aaron "Stumpy" Bontly says his entire team is made from rookies, where as the current champs could have guys with three years on-field experience.
"We don't have the size that Spring Valley does but we have more quickness and heart," Bontly said.
Spring Valley's Coach Mark Morris may query the "heart" comment, but his side certainly has made a reputation for quality pack play these last two seasons.
Irmo(0-5-1) Vs Lugoff-Elgin (0-6)
On the British Isles they would call this the clash for the "Wooden Spoon" -- the game to decide who finished dead last in the league. Both sides have struggled the last two season to get started. This year the only positive result for either was a 5-5 stalemate between Coach Simone Bontly's Irmo and Wendy Hill's Brookland Cayce.
L-E Head Coach Chris Knotts sees this last-placed battle as a real motivator.
Two years ago L-E were in a similar position fighting it out with Sumter.
"We came out on the wrong side of that one, Sumter were victorious," he said. "I think it's a real motivator to my seniors not to be in that position again."
This is the final game of this season for both teams as they have forfeited their first round games in next weekend's playoffs, according to coaches.
Greenville (5-2) Vs Sumter (2-4)
Sumter have exceeded expectations this year, even with their losing record. They've taken games from Irmo and L-E, but also they played Spring Valley to within a try. However, this week might be a struggle against a talented G-Vegas team.
Last year they made the regional playoffs and are on their way again.
The field of teams is two short this week after Chapin and Gilbert are both serving single game suspensions based on a disciplinary review. In other words, the pair are being forced to sit out after a heated, unsportsmanlike exchange between the clubs during their game.
