Fueled by quality play, team spirit and a little bit of nudity, the women of the Charleston Hurricanes are headed to challenge for a national title.
After a tremendous fundraising effort that has included everything from raffles to playing dress-up the Palmetto States team is ready to get on their plane to the Division II National Championships in Houston, Tx.
A trip in the qualifiers in Miami saw the side from The Holy City trample Memphis 22-5 to qualify before falling, by the same margin to the host team.
The fundraising effort began as soon as the team defeated Memphis in the Southeast qualifying.
"Well when you take into consideration flights, rental cars, and hotels, that’s a lot of money," Hurricane President Alexis Cameron said. "The moment that we realized we were going to Nationals we started sending out donation requests, contacting the Palmetto Rugby Union, and putting together fundraisers."
So far the team has held fundraisers in Charleston and Columbia, SC.
"The response has been great; knowing that we actually can play this sport and that we are good has made it a lot easier for people to actually want to support us financially," Cameron said, adding, "Donations are always welcome."
Now the team is set to head out on one of their longest ever road trips.
Helping the Charleston ladies make the trip are some of the proceeds from their very successful calendar, pictures from which lit up this Website earlier this year.
"Our yearly calendar is one of our more fun, fundraising ventures and once again our ladies hot bodies will help send us to Texas! Look for our new one coming out in March of 2010."
The Hurricanes are ranked as 6th seeds in the tournament to be hosted by the Houston Athletic Rugby Club. In their first game they will face off against the 9-1 Pittsburgh Angels at 1p.m. Saturday. If they survive the Angles, who have only lost to Detroit this season, Charleston could face local rivals in the Raleigh Venom if they can defeat hosts Houston.
The finalists on day two are the top teams in each of the three brackets and the best second place team.
