According to the New York Times,
The number of motorcyclist deaths jumped in 2007, accounting for nearly one in eight motor vehicle deaths, government safety officials said on Thursday…
…experts say the trend is most likely to continue, as high gasoline prices will encourage some travelers to use their bikes more often, getting 50 miles for the $4 gallon of gasoline instead of 20 in their cars.
These are some hair-raising statistics even for the veteran two-wheeler. The thought that on average 1 in 50 vehicles on the road are motorcycles but 1 in 8 deaths are bikers strikes a chord. I am less and less gung ho about recommending that someone get a motorcycle when they ask. You don't know how bad people drive until you get on a motorcycle. Out of the three friends who started riding in the last three months, two have laid it down already. Luckily they had minor injuries due to their safety apparel.
It is hard to tell whether riding a motorcycle is right for you. I know that if you buy a motorcycle for the top speed, it is wrong for you.
