Who's going to stop this box office champ?

The box office report for June 26-28, brings a near record-setting performance from TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN.  The movie comes just short of the biggest five-day opening ever, set by last year's THE DARK KNIGHT.  Meanwhile, UP passes STAR TREK as the highest grossing movie of the year thus far.  Here are the estimates:

1.  TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN ($112 million)

2.  THE PROPOSAL ($18.4 million)

3.  THE HANGOVER ($17.2 million)

4.  UP ($13 million)

5.  MY SISTER'S KEEPER ($12 million)

6.  YEAR ONE ($5.8 million)

7.  THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 ($5.4 million)

8.  STAR TREK ($3.6 million)

9.  NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2 ($3.5 million)

10.  AWAY WE GO ($1.6 million)

Analysis:

TRANSFORMERS 2 five-day opening total has reached $201 million, at the domestic box office!  That is the 2nd best five-day opening ever, falling just shy of THE DARK KNIGHT'S  $203.8 million assault on the box office last year.  Paramount studio, was forecasting a mere $150 million, for this highly anticipated sequel.  The film has already made back it's $200 million dollar production budget, and is currently the #1 movie internationally.  Although, reviews have not been as positive as 2007's TRANSFORMERS, the sequel is on pace to surpass the world-wide total of $700 million, the first installment made.  Now, the question of whether this film can surpass THE DARK KNIGHT at the box office begins.  The film should come close, but will need audiences to see this film multiple times during it's theatrical run.

As mentioned above, Pixar's UP, has surpassed STAR TREK as the highest grossing movie this year.  The highly praised animation has raised it's total to $250 million, just eclipsing STAR TREK's $246 million.  UP had it's biggest percentage drop at the box office this weekend at nearly 50%.  Unless, a nuclear attack happens sometimes next week, and all theaters are wiped out, TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN will surpass UP as box office king this year.

MY SISTER'S KEEPER debuts in the #5 slot at the box office.  The film is receiving so-so reviews from critics.  The wrap on this film, is that it doesn't do anything except make one tear up a few times.  The story is incredible but the execution is apparently lacking.  This is one of those films, that will make it's money during the week as opposed to the weekend.  Don't be surprised if this film performs strong on the weekdays.

This weekend's results, reveals the harsh reality of a few films, that are officially labeled failures, at the box office.  THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123, YEAR ONE, LAND OF THE LOST, and TERMINATOR: SALVATION are not even close to making their budgets at the box office.    PELHAM 123 is a bit of a surprised, since it was well-received by audiences and critics.  However, the film needs to make $200 million to be profitable.  Right now it barely cleared $50 million.

Starting on Wednesday, TRANSFORMERS 2 will get some competition from two big films.  ICE AGE 3 and PUBLIC ENEMIES, should put a dent into the monster grossing film.  Follow that up in a couple weeks with HARRY POTTER, and chances are TRANSFORMERS 2 will not catch THE DARK KNIGHT.  It will be interesting if it can clear the $400 million mark domestically though.  Let the watching begin!  Enjoy some related links below:
