TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN set a huge opening day record at the box office on Wednesday. Pulling in $60.6 million, translates to the biggest Wednesday opening ever. The film is second all-time for opening day gross, trailing only THE DARK KNIGHT, which hit $67 million on a Friday opening last year.
The talk for the next film in the franchise is already brewing. Judging by the opening on Wednesday, this film will easily make back it's budget of $200 million at the box office. Add the totals from the international box office and this sequel may surpass the original. In 2007, TRANSFORMERS ended up snagging over $700 million world-wide. That's a lot of energon! The only real competition, at the box office, this film may have to deal with is the upcoming HARRY POTTER release. That happens on July 15th, but with a few week buffer-zone between the two highly anticipated films, TRANSFORMERS 2 should romp at the box office for more few weeks.
Director Michael Bay, said he needs to recharge the batteries, before he even starts to think of TRANSFORMERS 3. However, the writing team of Robert Orci and Erhen Kruger are starting to brainstorm ideas. Many people are forecasting a 2011 release for the third installment. Chances are it will be showing up in the summer of 2012. Expect Michael Bay to receive a huge budget once again. For fan-boys, let us hope that some of that budget will be spent on the character Unicron.
