Analysis:
After three weeks, THE HANGOVER drops to #2 but is still making a killing in terms of profits. The talk of sequel has already begun for this successful film. THE PROPOSAL started off strong for it's opening weekend taking the top spot. The film had a budget of just $40 million, so the outlook is looking good that this film will be a success for the studio, despite mixed reviews from critics.
YEAR ONE was considered to be a contender for the top spot this past weekend. The film had unexpected competition from surprise hits like THE HANGOVER and UP. The positive reviews for those two films have given them a longer shelf-life at the box office. YEAR ONE is not getting great reviews, and with a $60 million dollar budget, this film will not be making a profit in theaters. The film will have to rely on DVD sales and rentals to help make up the difference. The ideology of the film is welcomed, but the execution and delivery of the comedy is not working with audiences.
THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 dropped to #5 in it's second weekend. The film has made $43 million domestically thus far, but it won't clear it's budget of $100 million at the theaters. Although, a film like this could get some help from the DVD release, especially if they include the original film as part of the deal. The next couple weeks will tell the story on this film's profitability.
So far, STAR TREK has been the highest grossing film this blockbuster season, with a total of $240 million. This won't last long, since UP is right on it's heels with $224 million thus far. UP should pass STAR TREK before the season ends, but the real competition is coming this Wednesday with the release of TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN. It should also be noted that ANGELS & DEMONS is doing extremely well outside the U.S. Although the film is under-performing domestically, it is the top film world-wide in terms of gross.
