On November 10th, Disney and Pixar's Up hits the market on Blu-Ray and DVD.  The bundle is loaded with bonus features that include extensive behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the setting and characters in the #1 animation of 2009.  Below is a review of what to expect in the Up Blu-Ray 4-disc set.  Features included are highlighted in bold.

Disc 1 (Blu-Ray presentation)

As most studios do, we get some previews of upcoming releases coming to theaters and/or DVD.  Notably, are teaser-trailers for Toy Story 3 and The Princess and the Frog.  After one or two DVD releases are covered, the main menu appears.

Next is an option to maximize your home theater viewing of Up.  This quick test run of your system is purely optional and chances are one won't want to mess with it.  However, it's not a bad idea to click through it.  Now to the feature presentation.

Up tells the story of an old man, who is quietly seeking one last adventure in his life.  Knocking on his door is a young boy scout who is looking to gain his final merit badge.  The old man plays along and gives him a task that is more or less a way to get rid of him.  We learn that our elderly friend has great attachment to his house and despite city planners offering money to buy it, he refuses.  Finally, he is ready to take his big adventure to honor his wife's memory to a far away land in South America.  He rigs his house with what seems like a hundred-thousand balloons, and his house becomes a machine of flight.  Everything is going to plan until he hears a knock on his door again.  Our young boy scout seems to have inadvertently hitch a ride, much to the displeasure of the old man.  Reluctantly, they work together in order to reach the distant land the old man is searching for.  Once they arrive, the real adventure of both their lives begins.

There are plenty of formal reviews for one to read, so here's a thorough one to check out.  When most people think of an animated movie, they are looking for out-of-this-world characters, a story that challenges reality, and underlying message that sends everyone off on a good note.  Luckily, this feature has a bit of everything.  The material presented is probably goes the deepest of any animation in the last then years.  The excellent set-up and continuity is simply out of this world.  Using the dynamic of emotional dialogue and scenes, makes this a fulfilling movie to enjoy.  Plus, it's all fun!  Just don't expect a laugh riot, for this one tends to focus on story development.  Which becomes quite clear when watching the bonus features.

We also have an option to watch the feature presentation in Cine-scope.  Basically, one gets the entire feature presentation as the co-directors (Pete Docter, Bob Peterson), speak on why they did certain scenes or how they came up with a certain idea.  If you've never done this feature on a DVD this would be the one to try it on.

Now to Bonus Features.  The first few selections have a couple of shorts (4 minute movies) that one can choose from.  One title is Partly Cloudy, which is intelligent and creative.  Another is titled, Dug's Special Mission.  This one is a must watch for it ties in some details that are seen in Up.  After those shorts, their is quick 10 minute feature on the character "Charles Muntz."  This feature covers alternate endings and ideas for the character we learn about in Up.  It was interesting to see how the storyboards looked for the alternate scenes.

A standout feature, and probably the most unique aspect of the bonus features is titled, Adventure is Out There.  This feature shows the great lengths to the creators went to in creating the world seen in Up.  To properly create the landscape of Paradise Falls, the team traveled to Venezuela and embarked on a dangerous hike in a remote place.  Their experiences easily make this 23 minute feature worth watching.  After that, one will find a few sneak peaks of what will be releasing on Blu-Ray in the near future.  Titles include, Ponyo and, Dumbo the 70th anniversary edition.

Disc 2 (Exclusive Blu-Ray bonus)

This bonus disc includes the game Global Guardian Badge game.  It's nothing more than a geography test hosted by the everyone's favorite boy scout Russell.  Our next option is a 8 documentaries on the character development with the many creators of Up.  After watching this, one will truly see how everyone had a strong passion for this project.

Moving through the list, one will find the promotion package for this feature film, along with the worldwide trailers to view.  Next is the feature titled, Married Life.  This covers the opening montage the theatrical film displayed.  Here the creators discuss how they originally had a different idea for the powerful opening.  They show us by use of storyboard animation.  Clearly, the opening was one of the most discussed parts between all involved in making Up.

Disc 3 (DVD and bonus features)

This is your standard DVD which includes the feature presentation and has some of the bonus items mentioned above.
