Want to see time-honored green living traditions in action? Look no further than the 103rd annual Multnomah County Fair, taking place this weekend at Oaks Park.
Long before “eco-friendly” was even a buzz word, Portlanders knew how to live sustainably. They made a practice and an art out of canning fruits and vegetables, baking their own breads and other sweets, sewing quilts to keep warm, and knitting or crocheting clothing and basic household items.
You can get inspiration in all these areas and more at the fair. You’ll see prize-winning baked goods, needlework, clothing and quilts. There’s even hand spinning and weaving.
Also at the fair there will be rabbit shows, a petting zoo, pony rides, dog sports (such as agility and fly ball) and a canine fashion show. There’s even duck racing (yes, you read that right, duck racing), food, entertainment and children’s crafts and activities.
Best of all, admission to the fair is free, and so is parking.
Oaks Park is just north of the eastern end of the Sellwood Bridge. The fair runs from Saturday, May 23 through Monday, May 25, noon to 7 p.m.
It’s a great way to spend Memorial Day weekend close to home, and see people carry on green living traditions from their grandparents’ day into the 21st century.
