Back on Tuesday, February 3rd, the city of Pittsburgh held a big party to honor its Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers, which included a parade through the city.
Well, it’s on again!
A little over four months later, Pittsburgh will hold another parade for the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday (June 15th), which will follow the same route as the Steelers parade.
The parade will begin at noon at Grant Street and Seventh Avenue and will end at Stanwix Street, where there will be a stage celebration with the players and the Stanley Cup.
When the Penguins won their first Stanley Cup on May 25th, 1991, tens of thousands of fans packed into Point State Park two days later to honor the likes of Mario Lemieux, Tom Barrasso and rookie Jaromir Jagr.
The following year for the Penguins’ second Stanley Cup Championship, the city held a “Back to Back” celebration at Three Rivers Stadium in front of an estimated 35,000 fans. The celebration was highlighted by Brian Trottier sliding on his backside while holding the Stanley Cup on a wet infield tarp on the Pirates baseball diamond.
Notes: Pittsburgh is the only city to win a Lombardi Trophy and a Stanley Cup in the same calendar year… Those two championships came 131 days apart (4 months, 11 days)… It only took 6,220 days (17 years, 11 days) for the Penguins to win their third Stanley Cup (last was June 1, 1992)
