What is more motivating than a trip to Philadelphia to play the Flyers at Wachovia Center? Not much for the Penguins!
After last night’s 3-0 loss to the Coyotes at Mellon Arena, the Penguins beat the Flyers 5-4 in a wild, rough, back and forth shootout.
“I think we were happy to get the chance to play here tonight to regroup and respond,” said Sidney Crosby. “Last night wasn’t our team and wasn’t our identity and I think we were a lot better here tonight and I think that is what we all expected.”
Marc-Andre Fleury was back in goal for the Penguins.
“I think that is what you have to expect when you play Philly,” said Fleury. “It’s always the same pretty much. It’s always a big rivalry and we knew that they wouldn’t quit.”
And neither team quit as the Penguins never trailed in this game and always seemed to respond when the Flyers bounced back to tie the score.
The Penguins scored first on an Evgeni Malkin goal, but the Flyers responded twice to Penguins goals until the Pens scored back to back goals in the second period to make the score 4-2.
The Penguins fourth goal was a fluke goal credited to Alex Goligoski in which Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn shot a puck in his own zone towards his own net and went off goaltender Ray Emery’s skates and into the Flyers net.
Down two goals late in the third period, the Flyers got an open net goal from Jeff Carter with 41 seconds left in the game, but the Penguins held on for the 5-4 win.
And as expected at the end of a Penguins-Flyers game, a brawl broke out behind the Penguins goal after Mike Richards ran over Fleury.
Kris Letang and Scott Harnell battled behind the net and Letang left the scrum with a bloodied finger, but wouldn’t say how he was injured.
“I think he knows what he did and I will just tell you to ask Hartnell,” said Letang. “I want to be fair to him and you go ask him and make sure you get the right answer for that, but that was a first for me.”
Speculation says that Harnell bit Letang’s finger, but Letang would not confirm the allegations.
“It’s set up for the whole season and we have seven more games to play against them and we know that they are about to do stupid things like that at the end of the game,” said Letang.
