The injury to Sergei Gonchar last week is proving to be a big impact on the Penguins as they are struggling to score goals and are playing sloppy hockey.

Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur held the Pens to just one goal as New Jersey beat the Penguins 4-1 at Mellon Arena.

The Penguins talk about the loss to the Devils:

Head Coach Dan Bylsma

Talks about losing the special teams battle tonight on the power play

“We lost the special teams battle again tonight on our power play.  We just need to keep getting better.  Tonight was a situation where we got a lot of shots to the net and we got a lot of good looks, but we didn’t get any second chance opportunities and those are things that you need to have along with zone time to have success on the power play.  We can get better in that area."

Talks about the Devils getting ahead and then playing defensive

“A game against the New Jersey Devils the power play and the special teams is going to be especially important.   You need to come out on the positive side of that and tonight we didn’t.  That gives them a one goal lead, a two goal lead and then they play a real defensive, frustrating game and it’s tough to overcome when you lost the special teams game.”

Sidney Crosby

Talks about not generating very much and not capitalizing

“We didn’t generate a whole lot.  They are a team that doesn’t give a whole lot of opportunities.  They play a pretty disciplined game and then when you get your chances, you have to capitalize and really that was the difference.  They didn’t have a ton of good quality chances either, but the ones they got, they put in the net.”

Talks about Martin Brodeur playing well, but they could have made it tougher

“He played well, but we didn’t generate a lot of second and third chances.  With a goaltender of his caliber, he’s going to make those saves usually on the first one.  We have to make it as difficult as possible and challenge him.  I thought that he did make some great saves when they needed them, but I think we always look back and think that we could have made it a little bit tougher.”

Talks about not executing tonight, but still playing hard

“I think we have high expectations and you expect your team to be there every night and be in the game.  It just came down to execution.  A lot of guys are trying hard, it’s just one of those things where you couldn’t execute.  If you look at the Phoenix game, it’s a little bit different.  Guys worked hard tonight, but it was a matter of not putting it together.”

Marc-Andre Fleury

Talks about him making a couple of mistakes

“A couple of mistakes here and there, but when I make them, it’s a goal.  So it was a tough one tonight.”

Bill Guerin

Talks about the Devils playing well and just winning games

“They make the right plays at the right time most nights and tonight was one of those nights.  They don’t try to impress anybody; they just want to win games.  I know how the organization is and you don’t get points for winning pretty.  You just win."

Talks about not playing well the last two games

“We probably had our best one against St. Louis and then not so great the last two.  We kept working and it’s a good sign and it’s back to the drawing board.  It’s one of those nights that you don’t want ever to happen, but the other team is trying to win too and they played well.”
