Spring cleaning doesn't end with just de-cluttering, dusting and running the vacuum cleaner inside of your house.
To maintain the integrity of your whole home there are exterior spring time chores to do as well. So as winter is wrapping up, get your house ready for the warmer months.
Here are some tips on preparing your home for spring weather.
1. Walk around the outside of the house to be sure the grading is sloping away from the house.
2. Be sure downspout diverters are connected to the downspouts.
3. Check that the gutters are free of debris so the rain water can flow to the downspouts. Cleaning the gutters is a job best left to professionals.
4. Examine the exterior of the windows to see that the caulk is in good shape and not cracking.
5. Trim bushes and tree limbs away from the house and roof.
6. Clean the kitchen range hood filter to keep it working properly
7. Test and replace the batteries in the Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors as needed.
8. If you have a crawl space, crawl the outside perimeter to be sure the spring time thaw has not brought water into the crawlspace. While you are in the crawlspace check to be sure the sump pit is dry, if you have one, and if there is a sump pump, be sure it is operational.
9. If you have an air conditioner, change or clean the furnace filter.
10. Test the GFCI outlets in the house to be sure they are tripping correctly.
