On November 13, 2007, the flag flown over the United States Capitol was flown in my honor to commemorate a very special day in my life. A group of colleagues requested the flag and it was presented to me with a frame-worthy certificate and a letter from the congressman who made it happen.
Today, whenever family and friends visit, I like to take them pass the Capitol to show them where the flag was flown. It gives me so much pride. It's amazing how such a small gesture could have such a big impact on someone's life.
Here's how to get a flag flown for the special couple in your life:
1. Find the Web site or mailing address/phone number of your U.S. Senator or Representative.
2. Visit the Congress member's Web site and click on the link called "Constituent Services."
3. On the "Constituent Services" page, select the link called "Flag Requests" or "Flag Orders."
4. Follow the instructions supplied.
5. Most of the Members' Web sites include order forms you can print out and mail in.
6. Each U.S. flag comes with a certificate of authenticity. The certificate can include a personalized message for an event and/or person (example: For John Doe on his 35th Birthday -- Please limit the personal message to three sentences)
7. Flags can also be flown on a specific date. Please provide three days advance notice to allow time to fly the flag on the requested date (example: a flag flown on an anniversary date)
8. Be sure to include a mailing address to which your flag should be sent.
9. Allow 2 - 3 weeks for delivery.
10. If none of your Senators or Representatives has a Web site (very rare), phone or write their office and ask how to order a "flag that has flown over the Capitol."
