Continued political unrest in the Honduras capitol of Tegucigalpa has caused several major airlines, including American Airlines, Delta and Latin America based Taca Airlines to calcel all flights into the Tegucigalpa Toncontin Airport (TGU).

On July 5th, approximately 5,000 supporters of  Manuel Zeylaya are scheduled to march from Pedagogica University to Tegucigalpa's Toncontin Airport in anticipation of the return of the ousted leader from exile in Costa Rica, according to the most recent public announcement disseminated from the U.S Embassy in Tegucigalpa.  The airport officially remains open and Continental airlines will be operating flights on schedule, although travel waivers have been issued for passengers who wish to postpone their travel to a later date in compliance with the Department of State's travel alert.

Among the canceled flights are:

  • American Airlines #973 from Miami, FL
  • American Airlines #053 from Miami, FL
  • Delta Flight #0551 from Atlanta, GA

Passengers with tickets on the canceled flights should contact their airline to updated re-booking information.  For the latest information on fee waivers for all flights affected by the Honduran political situation, see Airlines waive re-booking fees on flights scheduled to Honduras.

The protests are in response to removal of Presient Zelaya after he was found to have violated the Honduran constitution by trying to pass a referendum to extend his term.  The event has been interpreted as both a military coup and a legal impeachment of the government official.  Congress has appointment Roberto Micheletti to serve as interim president until the Honduran presidental elections take place in November.
