Several UNLV football players felt the pressure to win a game for embattled coach Mike Sanford for weeks. They were finally able to celebrate a win against New Mexico on Saturday night.
The win is significant since it ends the longest conference road losing streak in the nation and it shows the 3-5 Rebels have not given up on their coach.
The Rebels offense scored on it first possession and never looked back. The Rebels led 21-3 at the half.
All-MWC candidate and senior receiver Ryan Wolfe became the conference’s all-time leading receiver with a six-yard reception in the second quarter. He finished the game with 11 catches for 118 yards and one touchdown.
Junior quarterback Omar Clayton had a bounce back game completing 20 of 30 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers. The Rebels received significant contributions from the running game as well. Channing Trotter rushed for 65 of the team’s 210 total yards rushing.
Senior linebacker Jason Beauchamp had eight tackles and two sacks and junior safety Travis contributed six tackles. The Rebels defense gave up two late touchdowns but played well overall.
The Rebels celebration will more than likely be short-lived. They face eighth ranked TCU in Texas Halloween night. The Horned Frogs thumped BYU 38-7 earlier on Saturday and will be looking to bolster its bid for a BCS bowl.
