Powerhouse Dwight Howard, the once-skinny kid from Atlanta, has awed and impressed everyone with his tremendous strength.
But it’s not just about workout and pumping iron. In an article by Scott Wallin, for Magic Magazine, the author revealed that even as Howard was bulking up and building up, nutrition was important:
“But the Howard growth plan isn't all about pumping iron. Smith [Mick Smith, the Magic's assistant coach for strength and conditioning] offers constant reminders about maintaining healthy eating habits, and Howard has even hired a personal chef to assure his nutritional goals are being met.
"Beyond that, Smith provides basic supplements, protein shakes and other healthy beverages as grab-and-go necessities for Howard on his way out the door. After all, a growing star has to stay well nourished.
"I told him that it's a job to eat, it's a job to not skip meals," Smith said.
Smith's messages to Howard was reinforced with the return of Bo Outlaw, who is living proof of the benefits of physical conditioning and nutrition.
In 2008 Howard appeared as a spokesman for the benefits of milk in conditioning the body and said at that time, “To reach your dreams as a pro athlete, I know what it takes – good nutrition and excellent fitness.”
As he says in the video below, “...it’s not steroids…it’s just staying in the gym and eating the right foods.”
