Swingers Diner, the late-night/morning hangover hangout for those too cool to be caught dead at Denny’s or Norm's, has added cocktails to their menu.
The liquor license for many restaurants only allows serving beer and wine (from containers), not distilled spirits. But science moves faster than regulation, which brings us malt beverages, rice wine (like Soju, from South Korea), and whatever Swingers uses. These options attempt to replicate the taste of hard alcohol without the biting proofage. Might as well drive a Porsche with a lawnmower engine.
Swingers Screwdriver: Soboloff "vodka", fresh OJ
It comes in a pint glass with a lot of ice and resembles an Orangina more than a Mimosa.
Something tasted funny about it, but maybe it was the orange juice. After that citrus crop-killing freeze two years ago, who knows what distant planet oranges come from? Maybe even from the land of Concentrate.
With a decent beer and wine menu, save up your hard-fought dollars for the real thing, or order a scrumptious dessert instead.
On a side note, the deadline to apply for a California liquor license is the end of this month.
