Get your best duds out and prepare to roister at a premiere cocktail event entitled Speakeasy inside the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood (at the Highland & Hollywood complex) this Saturday night, November 7, from 8pm to 11pm.
Drink:Eat:Play, an event planning company, and K&L Wine Merchants are calling together premiere spirit brands and LA's top mixologists to introduce hand-crafted cocktails using dozens of different bourbons, gins, and scotches to the dry public. Expect to see a roster of exquisite liquors from Chartreuse, Remy Martin, Cointreau, St. Germain, Luxardo, Delamin, Sazerac Rye, Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, and many more.
The Renaissance Hotel will transform into a 1920's speakeasy with a jazz lounge, fruits, cheeses, and drinks created by the talented cast of bartenders from the Edison and Varnish.
There are two entry fees: General Admission is $75; VIP is $150, which includes entry to the VIP lounge, champagne, desserts, and some passed appetizers. Besides the steep bribe (ticket cost), "attire that exudes a sense of sophistication is required for entry."
If you are looking for a one-night introduction to the high life of Los Angeles cocktails and don't want to wait in line to squeeze into Varnish or in the alley outside the Edison, this is the place to be. I recommend bringing a few friends, have everyone order something different, and sample one another's selections. Pace yourself, or maybe pay for a designated driver to hang out and play games at nearby uWink.
If you enjoy yourself, check out the calendar of events at the Edison or visit Varnish or any of the other cocktail bars in this glamorous metropolis.
And don't take any wooden nickels.

Correction: In my last article on H.P. Lovecraft-themed cocktails, I originally described the first Lovecraft Film Festival theater as a former porn theater, which is untrue. The history of the 5th Ave. Cinema is located here.
