It is difficult to make something special out of what is essentially meat encased in a bun. Throw on some chili, maybe even add sauerkraut, yet it is still basically a hot dog. In most cases, there is rarely anything special about them. However, something about Mark’s Hot Dogs has been calling patrons back for over 40 years. Maybe it is the shape of the little restaurant, the cheap price, or the convenience of ordering from your car, whatever the reason is, the popularity is still held at the big orange dome.

If patrons are never disappointed, then they’ll keep coming back. And, there is nothing to really complain about with Mark’s Hot Dogs. The dogs taste just the way they should – like a hot dog. And yet, they did not leave my taste buds wanting more.

The chili for the chili dog was fresh and hot, with your choice of cheese and onion additions. It contained lots of beans, with only the faintest hint of sweetness. However, being wrapped in paper made the chili dog extra messy, so I would recommend extra napkins.

The vinegar from the sauerkraut is a good addition to add flavor to the hot dog. It tasted just like my favorite brand of sauerkraut I buy at the supermarket.

All in all, there was nothing wrong with the various hot dogs, but nothing special enough to leave this Examiner thinking my meal was special either. No news is good news, right?

The old-fashioned touch with the car service is a pleasant aspect of this eatery. It gives the place a nostalgic quality, while it also gives a resemblance to the typical drive-thru for fast food joints.

And, like most fast food places, Mark’s is relatively quick and cheap – $2.85 for a regular and $3.50 for a chili dog.

At least the milkshakes add some originality to the food – the orange milkshake, that is. Not too thick, and not too thin, the orange milkshake gives a pleasant reminder of an orange-sickle pop. For only $2.95, there is no reason not to add this on the side of your dog. There are also floats and other shakes for those who prefer something a little more familiar. Despite the ability to buy your own hot dogs and buns at your local grocery store, the orange milkshakes may be harder to copy.

For those who have grown up on Mark’s Hot Dogs or are taken with the big orange hut, feel free to let me know what makes this place special to you. It is possible that this Examiner may have missed something.

Mark's Hot Dogs
There is little to say about a hot dog, but there is much to stare at with this big orange.
