May 1 is New Homeowner's Day. If you recently purchased a new home, CONGRATULATIONS! (and in the present economy, I also have to wish you good luck).

The natural progression of events says that a housewarming party is in order. After all, you need new things to fill your new home. Don't feel obligated to have a party the day after you move in. Take your time to get settled in and unpack your boxes first.

A housewarming party can be as formal as you want it to be. It is most fun to match the party to your personality. It can be a Sunday brunch with made-to-order omelets and mimosas. It can be pizzas and beer followed by the big game on TV. If you have kids, it can even be one giant playdate. The sky is the limit.

Here are a few themes to inspire you:

Home Sweet Home: Serve a dessert buffet complete with a flavored coffee and hot chocolate bar. Set up a candy display for your guests to fill their own bags before they leave. This should be an afternoon or after-dinner event.

Kiss the Cook: If you love to cook, then this kitchen-themed party is perfect for you. your guests bring gifts to help you fill your kitchen. It can be a set of pots or a set of dishtowels and everything in between.

Paint Party: Combine your housewarming with a little chore. If you have a small guest list, then invite them over to help paint your new house. Make it fun! If you are really brave, incude the kids.

The most important elements of planning a housewarming party are constant no matter what your style.

  1. Send invitations far enough in advance for your guests to reserve the date for your party. It can be an evite or a paper invitation.
  2. Be sure to include your full address and directions to your new home.
  3. As your guests RSVP, you can tell them about your home's color palette and style so they will know what to buy. If you are registered at a store, then give them that information too.
  4. Use your RSVPs to plan for enough food and beverages, including plates, napkins, flatware, etc. Nothing kills a party faster than running out of food.
  5. Make sure you have enough seating and surfaces for resting plates and drinks.
  6. Do all of the cooking and cleaning before the party begins so you can have fun with your guests.
  7. Set the ambience with music and lighting.
  8. Always give your guests a small thank you gift before they leave. A basket of great chocolates by the door is sufficient.

Have a stack of notecards available for your guests to leave recipes, housekeeping tips, and phone numbers to local businesses you may need.

Have fun rolling out your Welcome Mat.
