Covan employee loads new Cosmo storage container

To combat the wave of consumer and corporate belt-tightening, members of the traditional full-service relocation industry continue to scrabble to take advantage of the growing interest in do-it-yourself (DIY) moving and storage options worldwide. And now there’s a new kid on the block.

Covan World-Wide Moving, Inc., one the Southeast’s largest privately held full service moving and storage companies and largest nationwide agent of Allied Van Lines, recently took delivery of their first rotationally molded, modular and collapsible transportation containers.

Produced by Inspirion Ventures Inc. - a unit of Pittsburgh based Nova Chemicals - the Cosmo Container line of polyethylene shipping boxes are currently being produced in two sizes by Plasticraft Corp., a rotational/blow molder based in Darien, Wisconsin.

According to Jeff Coleman, President and CEO, Covan eventually plans to distribute up to 1000 of the smaller model 759 boxes throughout their network of over 50 local moving and storage companies nationwide. As one of the Coleman American Companies, Covan is headquartered in Midland City, Alabama.

Asked why he settled on this option, Coleman noted that the Cosmo container “is a unique product offering that allows us to provide a safe, sustainable and cost-effective moving and storage solution to our customers.”

For now, Covan plans to use the Cosmo containers for local moving and storage purposes only. Currently there are no plans to use them to ship household goods, special products or general commodities domestically or internationally although, according to Inspirion, the Cosmo containers could provide significant freight, weight and storage savings for interstate moving and storage companies.

Slightly larger that a traditional Type II military style liftvan, the 250 cu ft (90”Lx61”Wx101”H) molded plastic box is more than twice as heavy as it’s familiar wooden counterpart. Using a forklift, one person can easily and effortlessly erect or collapse the containers in about five minutes. Cosmo containers are completely weatherproof because of their construction and can safely be stored outdoors even when loaded.
