The National College Fair is not your typical fair.

It only comes around once a year, but it’s well worth the wait. The National College Fair, sponsored by NACAC, brings over 250 colleges and universities from all over the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, and Australia to Seattle on October 18 & 19. (Dates vary for other cities.) It’s your chance to talk to school representatives, pick up info, and attend information sessions on everything from financial aid to testing. You can even get free help and expert advice from local high school and independent counselors.

New this year is the chance to pre-register for the fair in Seattle. This new option allows you to print out an admission ticket. The barcode on this ticket can be scanned by the colleges, saving you all the time it normally takes to fill out the information cards at each booth and giving you more time to ask questions and visit with more schools. I highly encourage you to take advantage of this great new feature!

Like the state fair in Puyallup, there’s something for everyone at a National College Fair. From pre-med to culinary arts, you can find a school that offers what you’re looking for. You can also talk to someone who knows the school from firsthand experience.

So, be sure to put it on your calendar:

Sunday, October 18 - 12 – 4pm
Monday, October 19 - 9am – 12pm
Washington State Convention & Trade Center
  Hall 4 E

You can find the list of participating colleges here. (Enter 2009 Seattle NCF and click search.) If you don’t happen to live in the Seattle area, you can click here to find a National College Fair near you.

Some of you may be asking yourself, “Why should I go to this college fair when my school is doing their own?” The answer is simple: numbers. Local school fairs usually have a relatively small number of schools represented – a number that in this time of budget cuts is likely to get smaller. A National College Fair attracts a large number and variety of schools. Colleges know that there will be lots of students to talk to so, they make the effort to send their reps. I can’t tell you how many students end up applying to colleges they found out about at the National College Fair – colleges that might not have been at their school’s fair. You can never have too much information, so by all means, if your school offers a college fair attend that, but make sure you get to the National College Fair as well.

One last thing, before you head out to any college fair be sure to read Taming the college fair in 3 easy steps. Step 1: Prepare for it and Taming the college fair. Step 2: Go to the fair
