Mississippi Storm History: What happened on this date (November 10)

As a part of Tornado Awareness Month, the Jackson Weather Examiner will review severe storms that affected the state throughout the month of November.

On this date -November 10th:

In 2002, a deadly severe weather outbreak unfolded across the state during the afternoon and  evening hours with several significant tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail.  This severe weather event  is one of the more notable tornado outbreaks during the month of November in the state of Mississippi and across the country (2002 Veterans Day Weekend Tornado Outbreak).

According to the National Climatic Data Center, 11 tornadoes moved across the state.  Most of the tornadoes were large and long tracked.  Tornadoes tracked  2  to as long as 27 miles across the state with widths from 400  to 1000 yards  on November 10, 2002.

Three tornadoes touched down in Winston and Lowndes Counties with 2 tornadoes confirmed in Madison County.  In addition to the tornadoes in Lowndes and Attala Counties, large hail of 1 inch and larger were also reported.


A long tracked F-3 tornado formed in Lowndes County, about 3 miles southeast of Artesia and tracked  22 miles across the county, resulting in numerous injuries (55). Most of the damage and injuries was seen in Columbus around 7:20 PM. Here, extensive damage was received by several buildings on the campuses of the Mississippi University for Women and the Mississippi School for Math and Science. Major damage was reported to  60 homes in the southern part of Columbus as the tornado moved through. The tornado then moved into Lamar County, Alabama 2.5 miles southeast of Steens, Mississippi. 

A long tracked and deadly F-1 tornado developed in Winston County, almost 8 miles northeast of Louisville around 7:20 PM and tracked 27 miles, moving through parts of Noxubee and Oktibbeha Counties  into Southwest Lowndes County around 7:45 PM. As it moved through the town of Crawford, a man was killed while trying to warn his neighbors of the impending storm. Several homes and trees were also destroyed. The tornado moved into Pickens County, Alabama about 4.5 miles southeast of New Hope around 8:15 PM.


Notable Wind Damage Reports:

  • One mobile home used for storage was destroyed. A second mobile home was blown off its foundation. Some trees and power lines were blown down. Some of the downed trees fell on cars and temporarily trapped a few people in the cars in Alcorn County
  • Two mobile homes destroyed and  several homes and outbuildings were damaged in Winston County.
  • Minor damage to a house roof in Leake County
  • A couple of homes had roof damage in Wayne County
  • Thunderstorm winds blew down a few trees, resulting in minor structural damage to a few buildings in Kemper County. 

Property damages totaled over $60 million.

Damaging Wind Counties:  Alcorn, Choctaw, Kemper, Lafayette, Leake, Lee, Marshall, Noxubee, Smith, Tippah, Tishomingo, Union, Wayne, Yazoo

Large Hail: Rankin, Lowndes, Attala
