You don’t need a fancy ball gown to attend the National Marine Life Center’s annual Mermaid Ball on Cape Cod.
There are always plenty of pirates, sea creatures and mermaids dancing alongside those who love to dress formally.
Or dig out your Hawaiian luau wear for another twist on the Mermaid Ball’s ocean theme.
National Marine Life Center has fun evening planned
While the need for a hospital for stranded marine animals on Cape Cod is serious, the National Marine Life Center wants people to have fun raising money for it. Held at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, the Mermaid Ball includes an Admiral’s Cocktail Reception, buffet dining and live and silent auctions. Dancing this year will be to the eclectic music of GQ and the Lady.
The Mermaid Ball raises funds for marine animal rehabilitation
The National Marine Life Center will use proceeds from the Mermaid Ball to continue the construction of their new marine animal hospital. The turtle ward will open at the end of October, allowing critically endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles to recover from cold stunning when the local water temperature drops in the fall.
When complete the hospital will also care for seals, whales and dolphins that strand on Cape Cod. The National Marine Life Center is also actively involved in headstart and rehabilitation programs for northern red-bellied cooters and diamondback terrapins, two local turtle species whose numbers are declining.
Can’t make the Mermaid Ball this year? Donations are always welcome, or visit the National Marine Life Center website for more ideas on how you can help.
