In hopes of finding good authentic Chinese food in the DC metro area, once again I ventured into the fairly new Shanghai Peking restaurant in Old Town Alexandria. The menu offers a vast array of Hunan, Peking and Szechuan cuisine cooked without MSG and with 100% vegetable oil. The dishes are hefty and prices are great with appetizers ranging from $1.25 for an egg roll to $9.75 for the pu pu platter for two (chicken wings, teriyaki beef, shrimp toasts, spare ribs, Shanghai egg rolls and fried wonton). Entrées range from $5.25 for a chicken with mixed vegetables dish to $22.05 for the Peking duck. Shanghai Peking also has good lunch specials which start at $5.25.
As a group, we were able to order and try a wide variety of dishes, which were no better than average. Appetizers included the Shanghai spring roll, shrimp tempura, fried wonton and vegetable egg roll with the latter two being extremely soggy rather than crispy. Entrées consisted of shrimp and pork lo mein, fried rice, Shanghai chow mei fun, lemon chicken, Hunan pork, Mongolian beef and kung pao shrimp. Unanimously the last two were the best dishes, but still not that tasty. Overall, this is the second best, authentic Chinese food restaurant I have found, after Tony Cheng’s.
