McCain Takes Lead! The presidential race is heating up! Oh, how I love a good race! I also love a good sports event where the score isn't a blowout...no one likes to lose badly. So, to read the story today that the polls show John McCain has edged Barack Obama now for the lead has got people squirming in their seats again.
As one of the organizers of Vote! Longmont, I'm very pleased to see that this tight election year has inspired more people to get out and register to vote! I've had a wide variety of people ask for help with registering to vote. I've been stopped by an 18 yr old in a drive thru window who wanted information on registering to vote for the first time. I've also had an 85 year old man call me to help him as well. Don't remember what side of the party lines they stand on or wrote on their forms, nor do I care. It was important that they did it.
It's obviously a very important election year nationally. People are strongly taking sides and being very opinionated. I just hope that during this horse race that we see portrayed in the media, that people remember there are other horses in this race. Many cities including here in Longmont have local issues on the ballots as well that need to be looked at without the mud covered partisan glasses that some are sporting these days.
Remember that while you are caught up in the excitement of the national race, that when it's over the local issues will most likely be the ones to have a direct effect on you, your family, and your community. Study them well. Get excited about and stay involved in your local elections. Get to know your city council candidates and what they stand for as well. Most people when asked in an informal poll don't even know who they are! Check to see if your local cable stations offer coverage of city council meetings, school district meetings, and planning and zoning meetings (Our's does...you can even TIVO them and fast forward through the "boring" parts and you might even see someone you know!).
The presidential election will be over come November and not occur again for four more years, but there will be always another horse race to follow with local elections. Your neighbor or your best friend could be on that ballot! Yes, it's important to have faith in your elected president and it's interesting to watch people squirm in their seats when one horse pulls ahead in the race...but pay attention to the races in your own community as well.
Hopefully with the local elections, your friends will remember that they can place bets on horses that aren't just sporting the colors red and blue. Or else they need to lighten up and see the below :)
