We first met the dedicated people from Colorado Horse Rescue at their booth at Longmont's Festival on Main back in August. We've also visited their rescue location in Longmont to donate hay after the Boulder County Fair Parade. So it was no surprise to see that they were of great help in assisting with the horses evacuated from the Old Stage Fire that began yesterday southwest of Longmont near Boulder.

We received this press release from Hildy Armour, the executive director of CHR. We are happy to report the below news and hope that people will visit their website link to learn more about them and how you can also help or donate to their efforts.

Exceptional Community Response to Helping Horses in Olde Stage Fire

Boulder County, CO - January 8, 2009 – At least 200 horses evacuated in Thursday’s Olde Stage Fire are being returned to their homes at private residences, farms and ranches.

Colorado Horse Rescue and the Boulder County Horse Association express a deep “thank you” for the extraordinary response from the horse and animal community evacuating horses. Evacuations were done throughout Thursday afternoon and into the night. Numerous responders arrived with horse trailers and willing hands.

“This fire spurred us to call and offer our help. We are on a planning team as part of Homeland Security’s emergency State Animal Response Team. We have a ready list of who has horse trailers in the area, their phone numbers,” said Hildy Armour, executive director of Colorado Horse Rescue “We all knew to rally and who to call. This is just a great example of the community working together and planning ahead as a real asset in a time of need.”

A responsible and calm evacuation was carried out. The Boulder County Sheriff’s Officers provided “particularly helpful oversight.” The majority of horses were taken to the Boulder County Fairgrounds; others to private farms and to the Colorado Horse Rescue facility.

Colorado Horse Rescue works regularly with Boulder County Animal Control on horse abuse cases and is pleased to collaborate on this effort as well.
