Oakland Raiders cut five and other quick news
With the Raiders getting back to work after their destruction at the hands of the New Orleans Saints, the embarrassment has given way to determination, at least according to Head Coach Tom Cable who can't stop repeating that the beat down was not representative of who the Raiders really are. With the team moving towards their regular season mode, much of the practice was off-limits to the media, so here are a few nuggets from today's session.
The Raiders announced their cuts to get to the league mandated seventy-five players. There were no surprises in the names, nor were there any signiicant veterans.
Wide receivers Shawn Bayes and Will Franklin, defensive tackle Joe Cohen, offensive guard Marcus Johnson, and center Jonathan Compas were the cuts.
Compas is a player who could potentially come back as a member of the practice squad. He was an undrafted free agent out of UC Davis, and was a long shot at best to make the roster. Bayes is another undrafted free agent who didn't show enough to make the squad. However, with the Raiders apparent depth at wide receiver, Bayes just lost out on the numbers game.
- Terdell Sands had to breathe a sigh of relief when his name wasn't part of these cuts after spending all of the last two games on the sidelines. Considering teams often cut veterans at the first cut to give them a better chance to find a new home, it is a bit surprising to see Sands still around.
- Cable is putting the Saints game behind him, and focusing on the forthcoming game against the SeaHawks. "Back to work today and working on Seattle. Good effort and tempo today, a little bit again like a hangover if you will. We've just got to get over Saturday. I'm happy about that, so you understand that, because that means we really care about what happened on Saturday so that's really a good thing inside that."
- JaMarcus Russell summed up the loss to the Saints well, "I think that was very embarrassing the way things ended up happening as far them to put up forty-some points and we only scored one touchdown. We left a lot of points on the field. We’ve got to get better on third down, moving the ball. I thought we kind of, you know how they say you shoot yourself in the foot? I think our foot would be off by now. We kind of shot ourselves in the foot whether it was a penalty or… I’d say I missed a third-down pass to Johnnie Lee. I could have gave him a better ball, get two hands on it and catch it, make a first down. There were some young guys who had some fumbles. Whatever it is to make our team better, I think is some fundamentals, something we know we can fix. Other than that, I think we’re all in the right direction. That was a sign of what – that’s not us, the team that we strive to be and how hard we practice in training camp. The team that went out the other day, I don’t think that was us at all.”
- Russell added that he doesn't think that getting in someone's face is an effective way for him to be a leader at quarterback, "Guys, you never know what they’re feeling and how they’re thinking inside. With all the fans watching when you do that to a guy, you might put him in a bigger hole than he’s already in. Just go to him and pep talk him up. Just tell him, ‘We’ll get it on the next play. Hey, don’t worry about that. I could have made a better throw. Maybe I could have put it in a different place and you could have tucked it.’ You know what I mean? Just pull them up and just let them know there’s always another time, we’ll go out and get it. Put that behind you.”
- This is the fourth year in a row that the Raiders close the preseason with a trip to the Pacific Northwest.
- Asomugha is not expected to play on Thursday, but should be a go for the opener against San Diego.
Check back later tonight for a look at the Raiders from a fantasy football standpoint.
