Today is a day of pranks and laughter, so in the spirit of April Fool's, its time to take a look back at the last year and hand out the April Fool Awards for the silliest and oddest things that have happened around the Oakland Raiders for the past year. There is a feeling the darkness is lifting from the Raiders headquarters, so with that, I give you my last article here on Examiner.com.
The Court Jester Award:
In a time when far too many NFL players seem to take themselves too seriously, Johnnie Lee Higgins is a breath of fresh air. Both in his press conference where he confessed that the kicker nearly caught him on a punt return, and in his back-flips and goofy touchdown dances, he looks like he is having fun. Higgins guaranteed this award for himself when he did the Carlton Banks from Fresh Prince of Bel Air after scoring a touchdown.
The "That Was a Really Bad Idea" Award:
Oakland Raiders executive John Herrera accosted San Jose Mercury News reporter Tim Kawakami, and it was all caught on video. During the exchange Herrera called Kawakami a liar and accused him of smoking weed. I am sure that Herrera wishes he had never done that.
The "Soap Opera" Award:
This award has to go to the Lane Kiffin coaching drama. For much of the 2008 offseason, and until he was finally let go after four games in the season, the speculation was high that Kiffin would be fired, but he hadn't been fired. Then a few days later the cycle would repeat.
The "Oops" Award:
This award has to go to DeAngelo Hall. He was beat like a drum by Eddie Royal in the opener, and managed to play so badly that he got cut eight games into a seven-year contract.
The "Hurting My Case" Award:
This award has to go to Lane Kiffin, whose actions since he has been hired as the head coach at University of Tennessee have strengthened the case that Al Davis made against him on the overhead projector. Kiffin has been looking the way Davis painted him.
The "Worst Impression of an NFL Player" Award:
This has to go to Kwame Harris hands down. When he wasn't getting called for false starts or holding penalties, he was getting JaMarcus Russell assaulted. When he was benched, the Raiders offense improved markedly.
The "I Don't Believe My Own Eyes" Award:
This award has to go to Lane Kiffin for letting nearly thirty seconds elapse before sending Sebastian Janikowski out for a 76-yard field goal attempt.
So there are this year's April Fool moments, and I will be back tonight with more Raider news and info, so if you believed this was my last article on here, APRIL FOOLS!
Enjoy, folks!
