Before you bite into that burger, do you wonder what safety measures have been taken to prevent foodborne illnesses? What about the sliced turkey you brought home from the deli?
Have you ever wondered what steps restaurants and grocery stores take to keep your food safe? You probably don't give it much thought, but a lot of effort goes on behind the scenes to keep our food safe.
‘Behind the scenes’ is the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services Food and Consumer Safety Section (MT DPHHS/FCSS). This division is responsible for requiring food service establishments, including grocery and convenience stores, to abide by the Administrative Rules of Montana for food service establishments in an effort to ensure the safety of the food being served to the public.
While Montana does not have a numeric or letter rating system like many other states for the public to gauge food safety, we do have another mechanism that the public should begin to look for, The Montana FOOD STAR™ Award.
The Montana FOOD STAR™ Award program was created by the MT DPHHS/FCSS as a means to recognize those food service establishments that go above and beyond the minimum food safety requirements mandated by the Administrative Rules of Montana. Establishments that receive the Montana FOOD STAR™ Award demonstrate a proactive commitment to food safety.
The initial Montana FOOD STAR™ Award program began as a pilot program in Yellowstone County in 2000. The first Montana FOOD STAR™ Award was given to Old Country Buffet in 2001 and since then, more than 19 food service establishments have received the Montana FOOD STAR™ Award in Yellowstone County. A new version of the Montana FOOD STAR™ Award program was created by the MT DPHHS/FCSS with the assistance of RiverStone Health last year and is available for food service establishments statewide.
