Are healthy choices a long-shot at Long John Silver's? Evidently, not anymore. I opened up the early spring 2009 edition of the Neighborhood Source this week and low and behold, I saw the new additions to Long John Silver's menu called "Freshside Grille". Smart Choices under 350 calories for $4.99/each.
They offer three choices; grilled tilapia, Pacific salmon or shrimp scampi. Each dish comes with rice and a side of vegetable medley. The advertisement came with a variety of coupons, but none of them included these new dishes to my disappointment. Therefore, I went to their website and found $1.00 off coupon. www.longjohnsilvers.com Not only does this website offer coupons, locations and menus, but it also includes all of the nutritional information! I love it.
As a good Catholic girl on a Friday during Lent, I decided to check out one of these meals. I had not been to a Long John Silver's restaurant since my Grandpa took me there when I was about 8 years old. I visited the location on Independence Drive in Greenwood. Needless to say I was very skeptical.
The first thing that surprised me was they had a drive through window. The inside was really nice and clean as well. I ordered the tilapia and handed the employee my coupon. She gladly took it and within 5 minutes I had my meal for $3.99 + tax. The portion looked smaller than on the brochure, but taste is what matters right?
The fish was flaky and fresh smelling. The vegetables were cooked just right and so was the rice. Would have been nice to have brown rice as an option, but I digress; I'm grateful for the new changes they have made. Keep in mind that this is a pretty small portion even for lunch. You may want to add an additional side dish if it is indeed too light for you. For example, for an additional 60 calories and 2.5 grams of fat, you can have their hushpuppies or the corn cobbette for just 90 calories and 3 grams of fat.
Just goes to show you, you can teach an old restaurant chain new tricks.
