I tried Burt's Place's pan pizza the other day, the famous pizza place in Morton Grove owned by Burt Katz that has been featured on Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations.  Burt has been in the pizza-making business for years and has been the owner of some of Chicago's most-famous pizza joints, including Pequod's and Gulliver's. Burt has been credited with being the owner of the caramelized crust, that Pequod's still famously features on its pizzas.

Knowing all of this, I was prepared for a pizza that tasted much like Pequod's, which coincidentally is located a street or two away from Burt's in Morton Grove. And this pan pizza certainly did taste familiar to Pequod's. The same "burnt cheese," the same fresh ingredients, the same slightly thicker layer of crust versus the cheese.  The 12 inch pan pizza was very affordable, costing around $15. (They also serve some inexpensive beer and wine selections. ) While I waited to pick up the pizza, I took a gander around the tiny establishment, noticing the rustic walls, small but cozy booths, the many knick-knacks, and also eavesdropped on a conversation Burt was having with a patron about the No Reservations appearance. When Burt's wife, Sharon, brought out my pizza she had the sweetest smile on her face that just made me feel so welcome.  I happily brought my pizza home and welcomed the crunch of the munch on the pizza's crust.

All in all, I recommend checking out Burt's Place, especially if you live within 10 miles of the place. If you want further insight into Burt's Place, check out Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations piece:
