OK, so maybe that isn’t the case, but you can’t tell me your defense mechanism didn’t kick in and say, “You know, I knew those guys out there looked a little smaller than usual”. Still if your defense mechanism is working that leaves you a leg up on the Bears, who put on another embarrassing display in Cleveland.
The Bears may have won the game 16-10 over the Browns but about the only good news was they managed to avoid a winless preseason. Whoopee. We have a better third string than the Cleveland Browns… joy!
The bad news on the other hand came in bunches as the first-team defense picked up right were it left off against the 49ers, in a coma. The Bears once fierce defense showed little passion, got zero penetration, tackled extremely poorly, and made continuous break downs in containment allowing for huge gains on cutback runs. About the only thing that they improved on were penalties, but the offense picked up the slack there.
Now there has been any number of explanations. From “it doesn’t count yet” to “were just running our base defense” to “we’re saving ourselves for the Colts”. Seriously the more I watch and listen the more I get a creepy over-confident Detroit Piston vibe from this team. I don’t care if they are running their base defense; this group should be talented enough to stop an offense missing its starting quarterback, running back, and #1 wide receiver.
This is an unacceptable performance from a group that may now be only the third-best defense in their own division. I don’t want to hear how good you are. I don’t want to hear the intensity you are going to bring once you flip the switch. I want to see it. A Chicago Bears defense is supposed to be nasty, not an entitled bunch of sissies with more excuses than tackles.
I was pretty optimistic about this team until last night. So there’s at least one takeaway this defense managed during the preseason.
