Can Rex rise above the pressure?
Arguably the two best games Rex Grossman has played over the last 20 months have both come against the Seattle Seahawks. First last January, Grossman put together a solid game in the divisional round of the playoffs to help the Bears advance. Then, last year in his first game back as starter, he led the Bears into Seattle in a game they could’ve won if not for turnstile right tackle Fred Miller. Now Rex will travel to Seattle in need of a big game to potentially salvage his career.

Speculation abounds that unless Rex decidedly outperforms Orton the Bears will go for a change of scenery at quarterback. That means without a TD drive or two in Seattle, potentially Rex’s last chance with the first unit, his days as a starter could be numbered. As a noted Rex fan (and also someone stupid enough to promise to grow my own neckbeard if Orton won the battle) tomorrow night will be a tense one for me. Will Rex’s talent show through as he throws crisp outs and deep bombs? Or will he crack under the nerves and pressure and take bad sacks, fumble snaps, and throw puzzling interceptions?

Working on his side are a number of factors:

1)      The Seahawks offense will be missing Matt Hasselbeck and Bobby Engram. That means the Bears defense should dominate giving Rex good field position and plenty of opportunities.
2)      Seahawks’ defensive end Patrick Kerney, who terrorized Rex last season, will also not play. And even if he did Fred Miller won’t be there to give him a clean path to the QB.
3)      Devin Hester is going to start and see significant time at WR. Rex’s best attribute over Orton is his ability to make the big play. If Rex can hook up with Hester and show the Bears what might be it could be the crucial edge he needs to at least push the derby another week.

Now it’s fair to say I am a bit biased in my evaluation of this competition. After all, I have some of the worst facial hair ever imagined now riding on the outcome. However, I really feel the Bears best chance to win is with Rex taking, and fumbling occasional, snaps. But a lot of whether or not he gets that opportunity rests on a preseason game in Seattle. Only the Bears…
