BBQ Shrimp with Blue Cheese Souffle

Sedona Restaurant and Lounge on I-215 and Flamingo epitomizes seduction.  Deep cranberry and chocolate create a dark, mysterious atmosphere that moans, "buy me a drink, stranger."  Inside, the layout of the bar and tables encourage talking between friends.  Outside, lounge chairs surrounding a fire pit sitting in a pool of water encourage talking between strangers.  Sedona manages to create not only the perfect atmosphere, but also a wonderfully diverse menu.

Herbed focaccia waits on the table while the appetizers and entrees are being prepared.  Thick and springy, the focaccia is topped with sea salt, rosemary and thyme.  The crust is almost cracker-like, but the bread itself is buttery and soft  It's spongy texture easily absorbs olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

When one is presented with Beef Carpaccio ($15.00), raw beef, pounded, thinly sliced and served under a mound of arugula, shaved Parmesan and porcini mushrooms and white truffle oil, the first thought is probably not "refreshing." However, that is just what the beef carpaccio is:  refreshing.  Served cold, it is a unique appetizer to any meal for real carnivore.  The carpaccio is so tender that it breaks apart as soon as the fork hits the plate.  Carpaccio by itself is nothing special, but the addition of shaved, fresh, sightly salty Parmesan, porcinis and white truffle oil create a dish that is not just beautiful to behold, but equally beautiful to taste while sipping on a Shiraz.

Pork Potstickers ($12.00)--ground pork, scallions, lemongrass, and ginger are blended together and then stuffed into dough-- can be either fried or steamed. Very heavy on the ginger, potstickers have a slightly spicy bite, almost like an afterthought.  Resting in a sweet-and-sour sauce with shredded red cabbage and bright orange carrots, the potstickers are meant to be eaten slowly, so you an savor each bite.

BBQ Shrimp with a Blue Cheese Souffle ($14.00) consists of five, large, bar-b-qued shrimp swimming in BBQ sauce.  The shrimp are both firm and tender and the sauce is sweet and mildly tangy.  Unfortunately, the blue cheese souffle does not pair well with the BBQ shrimp. The souffle, moist and rich with eggs and blue cheese, is wonderful and should be served by itself.  Blue cheese, extraordinarily tangy and bitey is too sharp a contrast to the BBQ sauce.  Take Mozart's 5th Symphony.  Now, take Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On."  Now, play both of them at high volume at the same time.  You're left with a loud, irritating mess.  That is the BBQ Shrimp with a Blue Cheese Souffle.  Both Mozart and Marvin are respectable musicians and musical geniuses, but they are not meant to be together.

Sedona offers a $25.00 for any meal $50.00 or higher, but the coupon is only valid Sunday through Thursday, which is a real downer.  Between 4:00 and 7:00 pm, a half-off happy hour menu is offered.

Overall, Sedona is a great place to see and be seen.  The dinner prices, unfortunately, do not encourage diners to move past the appetizer menu (which is actually a lot more creative and ambitions) to the dinner menu (which is overpriced and a bit boring.)

The Movement, a group of upscale party promoters, hosts events at Sedona. If you are looking for the next big party movement in Vegas, visit their website at http://movementlv.com/.
